Anumba C J, Duke A Telepresence in virtual construction project team communicationsAbstract: This paper is concerned with the development of an appropriate communications infrastructure for virtual construction project teams within the framework of concurrent life-cycle design and construction (CLDC). It identifies the key communication facets which need to be addressed, and highlights the fact that these alter through the stages in the project lifecycle. It also argues that finding the right people to communicate with is as important as (if not more important than) finding information within a collaborative environment. The concept of telepresence, which is becoming increasingly important in communications within virtual organisations, is also examined and its potential within a CLDC environment discussed. The approach being explored in a collaborative research project between The University of Teesside and British Telecommunications plc is also briefly presented and the attendant benefits to the construction industty outlined.
