The Drivers and Barriers for the Development and Applications of Project Collaboration Systems in the Chinese Construction Industry

Abstract: Fragmentation is one of the major problems facing the Chinese construction industry. With its rapid development, this problem becomes more severe in the industry. In response to this problem, different collaboration systems have been developed by domestic and foreign construction and ICT companies. Although a significant of money has been invested, the impacts are still unclear. This paper reports on the findings of a survey conducted in 2008, with contributions received from 42 construction organizations including developers, designers, and contractors. The paper discussed the major problems and issues involved in developing project collaboration system in Chinese construction industry, and identified the key issues that support and inhibit the application of collaboration systems. Both qualitative and quantitative analyses methods have been adopted to analyze the results obtained. The results reveal the state-of-the art of collaboration systems in the Chinese construction industry and their impacts, at both Governmental and organizational levels.

Identification of Reusable Information in Construction Firms

Abstract: Nowadays most construction firms are using information systems as management tools and enormous information is being accumulated in the systems with time. This study aims to identify the reusable legacy information through investigations in the form of literature reviews and an expert workshop to facilitate decision-making. Major reusable legacy information items and the relevant activities are identified and the items are graded into three levels according to their reusability based on a proposed criterion. The result lays down a sound foundation for reusing the legacy information in the decision-making in construction firms.

Logical on-line hybrid computer actuator and quasi-static testing schemes of PC columns

Abstract: A preliminary investigation of the feasibility of employing Prestressed Concrete (PC) for bridge columns in high seismicity area is conducted. Satisfactory observation encouraged the authors to verify the preliminary findings by employing a more logical realistic testing technique. A rational on-line hybrid computer actuator testing scheme of seismically vulnerable structures using multi-directional loading is developed. The scheme is utilized for testing three PC column specimens. The innovative findings verified the superior effectiveness of the idea resulting in its recommendation in the latest Seismic Design Code for Prestressed Concrete Structures, Japan. Moreover, for the sake of clarifying and modelling shear strength degradation of such prestressed bridge columns as their draft ratios increase, specimens with low strength ratios are tested using displacement-controlled quasi-static loading. By analysing the results, an insight of concrete shear strength degradation for PC columns is clarified and modelled.
