Teaching Technological Leadership in Globally Distributed Teams Working with Building Information Models

Abstract: In this paper, the authors analyse leadership learning in distributed student teams working together on Building Information Models (BIM). This paper includes the curriculum design and learning outcomes for student teams consisting of students from Indian Institute of Technology - Madras (IIT) and the University of Washington (UW), USA. The literature on leadership suggests that with current communication technology, students who seek AEC professional careers need to include technological leadership in their learning. In this paper we explore leadership as a social process learned through experience. We conclude that technological leadership learning does occur in globally distributed student team assignments, and that with a two project approach, students can apply their learning in the second project immediately after learning from the first project.

Defining Construction Management Events in Situational Simulations

Abstract: The challenge and promise of educational computer simulations are to provide user experiences that allow for immersion into a dynamic system in which users discover the ramifications of their decisions in a complex environment. Researchers at the University of Washington, in collaboration with Michigan Technological University, are developing situational simulations to meet the needs of construction management education. The simulation environment, known as the Virtual Coach, helps users to further develop their decision-making skills in a problem-based learning setting whereby they investigate, integrate and apply concepts in a participatory, contextually rich, educational, yet fun video game-like virtual environment. This paper explores the development of this contextually rich and general-purpose environment and the userís experience as they progress from Project Awareness to Project Monitoring and into Project Management. In the Virtual Coach, users view project information in both Project Awareness and Project Monitoring. As the project and Simulation Events unfold, the user interacts with the simulation, making decisions that impact the project outcome. A Simulation Event includes the userís experience, variables altered by the event, and variables changed by the user. This paper defines the concept of Simulation Events within the context of the Virtual Coach, explains how the users become aware of an Event and how Events are triggered in the simulation, describes how users engage with the simulation (i.e., what variables are in play), and identifies types and formats of information available to a simulation developer to shape the learning outcomes.

Examining the Effect of Boundary Spanning Technologies in Virtual Project Teams

Abstract: Overcoming the challenges of virtual collaboration may require different approaches to achieve performance objectives for virtual teams of mixed nationality participants as compared to virtual project teams of single nationality participants. Many researchers have examined the way multinational project participants collaborate in order to sustain effective collaboration across boundaries. However, we lack a similarly nuanced understanding of networks of individuals on project teams comprised of mixed nationality participants that utilize virtual collaboration environments and new information technologies. In this paper, we examine the role of Boundary Spanning Visualization Technologies (BSVTs) to understand differences that may emerge at the cross-national boundary in virtual teams of mixed nationality participants. We found that BSVTs within the virtual workspace were utilized more frequently by virtual teams of mixed nationality participants. We also identified a positive correlation between effective technology usage and cohesive collaboration among project participants measured by network density. These findings have important implications for the effective functioning of multinational project teams that utilize virtual environments in the construction industry.
