THE EFFICACY OF REALISTIC VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENTS IN CAPTURING USER EXPERIENCE OF BUILDINGS

Abstract: Virtual models can offer early and inexpensive proxies of how the real environment will be experienced by its users. However, until relatively recently, the usefulness of virtual models has been constrained by the technological limitations of the software and hardware. Games engines now offer the industry a way to import multiple 3d formats to streamline workflow, with far greater realism and complex interactions with the created virtual environment. In order to be accepted as a reliable tool for design development and problem solving in architecture, engineering and construction, these virtual experiences must be capable of producing user-feedback that is credible. The assumption that a model of human experience from a virtual environment can be a dependable representation of how the real environment will be experienced needs to be tested. Such tests have hitherto offered inconclusive results and the paper reports on the early stages of a current project that aims to redress this. The use of equipment familiar to cognitive psychologists, such as lightweight head-mounted eye tracking systems, should enable comparisons to be made between user-experiences of real environments and their realistic virtual counterparts. Should the virtual environments be shown to communicate similar physiological responses from the participants and deliver similar experiential qualities when compared to the real environment, then it can be argued that they offer realistic visual representations and accurate representations of experience.

The use of an evaluation matrix to inform the IT strategic planning process for maintenance management

Abstract: The systematic review of information systems is an essential part of the IT strategic planning process. In the context of maintenance management systems this process is normally performed by the maintenance manager. However, many maintenance managers are ill prepared for this task and, as such, new opportunities may be missed or poorly performing computerised systems accepted as the norm. This paper describes the development of a set of practical guidelines in the form of benchmarks which could be used to assist maintenance managers when they review their systems. The benchmarks were based on an evaluation matrix methodology which was used in conjunction with a substantive questionnaire survey of maintenance managers to identify and evaluate the importance and performance of key computerised maintenance functions. The performance of computerised maintenance management systems was evaluated using an evaluation grid and areas of weakness were identified. The potential use of the benchmarks in the strategic review of computerised maintenance management systems is discussed. The paper concludes that the evaluation matrix method can be a useful tool to establish the general level of performance of computerised systems and thus it can inform the IT strategic planning process. In the context of maintenance management systems the evaluation method identified weaknesses in key maintenance processes and these may need to be fundamentally reengineered.

LCAdesign: an integrated approach to automatic eco-efficiency assessment of commercial buildings

Abstract: Buildings consume resources and energy, contribute to pollution of our air, water and soil, impact the health and well-being of populations and constitute an important part of the built environment in which we live. The ability to assess their design with a view to reducing that impact automatically from their 3D CAD representations enables building design professionals to make informed decisions on the environmental impact of building structures. Contemporary 3D object-oriented CAD files contain a wealth of building information. LCADesign has been designed as a fully integrated approach for automated eco-efficiency assessment of commercial buildings direct from 3D CAD. LCADesign accesses the 3D CAD detail through Industry Foundation Classes (IFCs) - the international standard file format for defining architectural and constructional CAD graphic data as 3D real-world objects - to permit construction professionals to interrogate these intelligent drawing objects for analysis of the performance of a design. The automated take-off provides quantities of all building components whose specific production processes, logistics and raw material inputs, where necessary, are identified to calculate a complete list of quantities for all products such as concrete, steel, timber, plastic etc and combines this information with the life cycle inventory database, to estimate key internationally recognised environmental indicators such as CML, EPS and Eco-indicator 99. This paper outlines the key modules of LCADesign and their role in delivering an automated eco-efficiency assessment for commercial buildings.
