ADVANCING THE USE OF BIM THROUGH A GOVERNMENT FUNDED CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY COMPETENCY CENTRE IN IRELAND

Abstract: The main aim of this paper is to develop the early case for a new Competence Centre dedicated to industry led research in the Irish construction industry. It incorporates the results of a survey carried out by the Construction IT Aliance (CITA) and also identifies similiar centres carrying out industry led research around the world. Results from the survey show a clear support for the establishment of such a centre in Ireland and, in particular, a strong interest in Building Information Modelling (BIM) as a immediate priority research area. BIM is having a profound effect worldwide on the construction industry. The development and adoption of BIM technologies is in parallel with other major changes relating to project procurement approaches, such as Integrated Project Delivery (IPD), and the general sustainability agenda. Although slow to take off in Ireland to-date, BIM is becoming extremely relevant in other countries, with over 50% adoption in the United States and an average of 36% in Europe. The authors argue that a government funded Competence Centre will facilitate the Irish construction industry in re-establishing itself, domestically and internationally as a competitive entity.

Investigations in the BICT project of state-of-the-art ICT for industrialization of house building processes

Abstract: The research presented here is part of a project named BICT, ”Evaluation of benefits of ICT for the indus-trialization of project and product processes in the construction industry”. Its overall objective is to establish a mutual understanding between the construction industry and R&D actors of the needs and possibilities of ICT. The project is a cooperative effort between Swedish and French researchers and industry representatives within the EraBuild program. It includes an investigation of the processes and ICT tools in a representative house building project, together with a study of the State-of-the-Art of ICT for immediate, short and medium term uptake. This paper presents the main results of the State-of-the-Art study with specific focus on: - Visualization and coordination using digital mock-ups of 3D models; - Model based quantity take-off; - Integration of applications for product design; - Reuse of experience based knowledge. The presented study concludes that the use of integrated 3D applications must be introduced early in the project lifecy-cle in order to pave the way for the use of object-oriented information in downstream processes. This requires common standards for 3D based deliveries developed in cooperation between industry and R&D actors through joint analyses of actual information management both in industrialised partnering-like processes, and fully industrial building proc-esses.

Determination and Costing of Sutainiable Construction Projects: Option Based Decision Support

Abstract: The building stock in Europe accounts for over 40% of the final energy consumption in the European Union. Moreover, the construction sector is one of the largest producers of industrial waste contributing 40-50% of landfill in some EU countries. A common way of creating a forward planning for optimal resource efficiency in construction project is to apply Life cycle cost (LCC) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in the decision process. There are, however, difficulties in assessment of the impact of the whole project on the environment and estimating its sustainability. The EU funded 7th framework project CILECCTA sets out to develop a LCCA (Life Cycle Cost and Analysis) tool supporting the determination and costing of sustainable project strategies.Current LCC software can assist the decision making process in simulating different alternatives for the design, build, maintenance and demolition of assets – allowing both client and builder to determine the favoured alternative for them. Through linking LCC and LCA methodologies, the CILECCTA project will go one stage further by enabling an assessment of the impact of the whole project on the environment and estimating its sustainability. It will also include the recently developed new generation of Whole Life Costing (WLC) methodology including a probabilistic approach to the development of sustainable WLC strategies, using a real options approach. This paper sets out the framework of current LCCA tools and the challenges in developing a modular LCCA engine integrating asset-related data in price banks and life cycle inventories across Europe. The research leading to these results has received funding from the European Community's Program FP7/2007-2013 under grant agreement no 229061.

Collaborative Whiteboard: Towards Remote Collaboration and Interaction in Construction Design

Abstract: The need for improved interaction and sharing of information in construction projects has grown significantly in recent years, especially as projects have become ever more complex.The early design stage is of particular importance for the final results as most of the building lifecycle characteristics are committed at this stage and the opportunity to influence them decreases rapidly as the cost of making changes, or correcting design errors, increases dramatically. Recent advances in information technology offer methods and tools to meet this need. In view of this, CollaBoard – an interactive whiteboard for remote collaboration – was developed to support mixed, geographically distributed teams. Interconnected via a network, two or more system setups allow users to interact and share information over a common interactive vertical whiteboard. Superimposing the live video of the remote partner – “people on content” – also allows the transfer of Meta information such as gestures, et cetera; resulting in a more intuitively distributed collaborative teamwork. Based on technology such as CollaBoard, the envisioned outcome of our research is a system allowing experts from different disciplines to integrate and optimize lifecycle-related parameters into a new product. The resulting system will allow each expert to adjust his/her own set of parameters, giving access to a large database through intuitive interfaces. This article also discusses possible areas of application with focus on early design, recommends future development needs and provides a brief comparison to existing and state-of the-art systems. The development work includes interdisciplinary research and development and interdisciplinary collaboration between academia and industry.

BUILDING INFORMATION MODELLING DEMYSTIFIED: DOES IT MAKE BUSINESS SENSE TO ADOPT BIM?

Abstract: Building Information Modeling (BIM) offers a revolutionising way to design, document and procure buildings. BIM promises to become a new international benchmark for building design and documentation across industry on the basis of improved efficiencies and collaboration capabilities. However, BIM requires rethinking current practices and process thus it calls for a paradigm shift in the way we procure, design and operate buildings. There seems no question that BIM methodologies are to become the norm in the long term but more factual evidence is required today to provide guidance to industry. This paper investigates current business drivers for BIM adoption by architecture and building engineering consultants.BIM needs to compete against well-ingrained methods to deliver projects in a fragmented and rather traditional industry. This paper investigates 47 value propositions for the adoption of BIM under a multiple case study investigation carried out in Australia and Hong Kong (Aranda-Mena et. al 2008). The selected case study projects included a range of public (1) and private (4) sector building developments of small and large scale. Findings were coded, interpreted and synthesised in order to identify the challenges and business drivers, and the paper focuses mainly on challenges and benefits for architectural and engineering consultants, contractors and steel fabricators. As a condition for the selection criteria all case studies had to be collaborating by sharing BIM data between two or more consultants / stakeholders. As practices cannot afford to ignore BIM this paper aims to identify those immediate business drivers as to provoke debate amongst the professional and academic community.

Requirements Transformation in Construction Design

Abstract: Transformation of performance requirements to technical solutions and production parameters is central for architects and engineers in the design process. The delivery of a new low-carbon economy in Europe puts pressure on the construction industry to reduce the energy consumption in the building stock.Energy requirements are often regulated in national standards or recommended by branch organisations. New methods and tools has been developed to simulate and analyse the energy consumption in buildings and support the transformation of requirements for technical solutions. Today industrialised housing companies suffers from low efficiency in the design and information flow creating bottlenecks in the production process. Matching the energy requirements is of great interest for the construction industry and especially for companies developing industrialised housing system that often have control over the whole manufacturing process. Therefore are three different national standards for energy requirements tested on a industrialised housing system and evaluated in an ICT –environment that supports the design process for industrialised construction. The result of the research shows that the transformation of energy requirements to technical solutions needs well defined design activities based on deliveries through the process. A well defined design process together with a building system is also the backbone for development of ICT support systems.

A PROCESS MODEL FOR CONSTRUCTION SYNCHRONISATION USING TIME-SPACE PLANNING METHODS AND FIELD FORCE AUTOMATION

Abstract: This paper explores a proposed process model for construction synchronisation. The aim of the paper is to show the potential of working according to the Last Planner System of production and control by combining time-space planning methods and Field Force Automation. In addition, the paper aims to show the benefits of working with real time support regarding taking control actions in the schedule and to collect data for follow- up analysis. The paper first provides a background of the research and a description of the various methods and tools used in the process model. A process model is proposed based on the last planner and control system for the implementation of a new ICT tool with the purpose to enhance, planning and control in order to enhance construction synchronisation. It is concluded that site managers needs tools to change their view of planning from static view of the schedule which can be revised once or twice per project to the view that the schedule is a total dynamic instrument to be used to develop prognosis and measure for avoiding waste and delays in the realisation phase of the construction project. The paper is concluded with suggestions for how the method can be further developed and improved.

Learning about IT and learning using IT - a review of current practice on higher education AEC programmes in Ireland

Abstract: There is a debate concerning the appropriate extent, content and delivery of IT education for AEC pro-grammes. The aim of the research work described in this paper was to generate information to assist the debate, spe-cifically in Ireland, but the results and conclusions may also be of relevance to other countries. A survey of the relevant Heads of Academic Departments in the Universities and Institutes of Technology was carried out in June 2006 with a response rate of 89%. The context to this survey has been the relatively unique development of Ireland over the past ten years (population, economy, IT, construction industry, and higher education) in comparison to other European coun-tries. The recent implementation of the Irish National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) and its relationship with the European Qualifications Framework (EQF) for lifelong learning is also an important contextual issue for this research. The survey results include the range of specific software training on the AEC programmes, as well as the extent of in-clusion of basic IT training, understanding how computers work, understanding and writing computer programmes, consideration of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and the use of Learning Management Systems (LMS). A further interesting feature of the survey has been the identification of the record number of students on higher education AEC programmes in Ireland.
