A three level approach for exploring the ICT impact on the building design process applied to a real-life project

Abstract: An understanding of how ICT impact on the building design process and the architect's role and contribution within it can be crucial for the building project success. This paper introduces a possible approach of organizing and structuring design process actions and roles, and how ICT impact on them. This approach is based on the definition of three building project levels and could contribute to a better overview of how ICT impact on the building design process and on the architect's role and contribution. The aim of this paper is to illustrate how this approach can be used to explore the ICT impact on a real-life project.

Virtual reality technology applied in engineering education

Abstract: The three-dimensional geometric models used to present architectural and engineering work, show only the final form, which does not allow progress in constructions to be observed. But, the visual simulation of the construc-tion process of a building need mod-els which are able to produce dynamic changes to their geometry. This paper re-ports how techniques of geometric modelling and virtual reality were used to obtain models that could show their physical evolution over time and which would be able to simulate construction processes visually. Two types of work, concerning the construction of a cavity wall and a bridge, were developed as virtual models for educational purposes. These models make it possible to view the physical evolution of the work, to follow the planned construction sequence, to visualize details of the form of every component of each work and to support the study of the type and method of op-eration of the equip-ment necessary in the construction process. These models have been used to distinct advantage as educational aids in first-degree courses in Civil Engineering. The use of virtual reality techniques in the development of educational applications brings new perspectives to the teaching of subjects related to the field of construction.

Utility assessment of electronic networking technologies in construction

Abstract: Despite an explosive growth in virtually all areas of industry and commerce, Electronic Networking Technology (ENT) has only begun to make inroads into the construction industry practice. Although information exchange protocols in construction firms and on construction project sites make it difficult to take advantage of most ready-made solutions applicable in other industries, there is a significant potential of large benefits from the correctly developed and applied ENT solutions for construction firms and construction project site offices. This paper describes the ongoing research effort to determine variables related to the application of ENT protocols for the main types of construction project delivery systems and to measure the utility of ENT configurations in facilitating communication between parties involved in a construction project with respect to specific project delivery systems.

Slab formwork design using genetic algorithm

Abstract: A method to design cost-optimum slab formwork components is proposed in this paper. Genetic Algorithms (GAs), a technique based on the principles of natural selection and evolution, is applied to solve the optimisation problem. GAs search from a population of possible solutions limited by a set of constraints. The cost of form components and labor involved, were considered for the formulation of the objective function of the optimisation problem. The bending moment, shear, maximum deflection, imposed ACI code provisions, etc., were used as constraints for the optimisation problem. Application of GA to the formwork design problem provides optimum design parameters such as the optimum cross section for form members, optimum spacing of form members, etc., while minimising the total cost. Formwork made either from wood, wood-metal composite or metal alone can be designed using the proposed technique. The paper presents the case of general formwork design, however, the method as a whole readily applies to the design of formwok for elevated slabs and high rise concrete elements.

Numerical simulation of wind loads on high rise buildings

Abstract: Article presents a methodology of the numerical simulation of the wind on high-rise buildings, which was developed by the Department of Computer-aided design of structures of the Ural Federal University named after the first President of Russia B.N. Yeltsin. Paper includes the results of researches on development of a technique of determination of wind pressure upon high-rise buildings by means of numerical modeling in an ANSYS package. The investigation was carried out within the grant of the Russian Academy of Architecture and Building Sciences. The results are applied to calculation of wind pressure upon a number of high-rise buildings under construction in Yekaterinburg City (Russia). Simulation is performed in the program ANSYS. The simulated building is placed in a domain that is the numerical analogue of wind tunnel. Domain sizes are chosen in such a way that simulated buildings do not affect the flow of air on its boundaries. Shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model has been used. This model effectively combines the stability and accuracy to the standard k-? model in the areas, which are placed near the walls and the effectiveness of the k-e model at a distance from the walls with a smooth transition between them (input expansion functions). For the numerical solution of the governing equations the finite volume method was used (FVM). The scale of the turbulence is assumed to be 200-300m. Use of the developed technique is shown on the example of calculation of wind pressure and wind velocities in pedestrian area for high-rise building under construction in the City of Ekaterinburg.

A process and an object oriented analysis to integrate design and construction

Abstract: This study is aimed at identifying design related problems encountered by contractors with the intention of minimising them. A full process analysis was carried out on the design function of concrete framed ofice buildings whereby site problems were traced back to the relevant design information. Design processes that significantly contribute to these problems were highlighted along with their data flows. An Object-Oriented Analysis method has then been applied to model the information in terms of the fundamental ideas that underlie object- oriented technology i.e. object types and classes, methods, requests, encapsulation and inheritance. Proceeding through the five major activities of Coad & Yourdon's OOA method, a complete OOA model has been developed with potential to improve the construction related problems.

ENTERPRISE SIMULATION OF THE PRECAST CONCRETE MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY

Abstract: The lack of applied innovative tools, for improving the performance of the precast concrete products manufacturing industry, has led the researchers in this paper to develop an Enterprise Simulation Precast Concrete (ESPC) model, to improve the performance of the precast industry. As an initial stage, a detailed layout for the precast concrete production processes is developed in order to understand the relationships amongst the manufacturing processes in such industry. In addition, simulation methodology is developed to analyse the precast manufacturing system and identify the resource bottlenecks. Heuristic searching rule is developed in order to simulate the accommodation process of the produced items in a temporary stockyard area.The results indicated low utilisation of the used resources due to using only one curing area for storage and retrieval processes.

A Framework for Measuring IT Innovation Benefits

Abstract: This paper presents a new framework for measuring the benefits of IT in construction. The framework is based on the principle that benefits realisation must be managed by: planning for strategic alignment and business-driven exploitation, managing the process of predicting benefits, and by measuring resulting benefits after a system or innovation is implemented. Three distinct types of benefits are identified within the new framework associated with business efficiency, business effectiveness and business performance. A key barrier to the more effective exploitation and application of IT in the construction sector has been the lack of investment on a scale comparable with other sectors. A primary reason cited for the low level of investment is the low level of perceived benefits from IT investments amongst construction business managers. Many benefits evaluation methods exist and are widely applied in other sectors. Benefits evaluation methods in construction are under-utilised. One reason for this is the lack of fit between these methods, and their associated language, with the peculiarities of the construction sector. The new framework presented in this paper has been derived for specific application to the construction sector. The framework has been subjected to testing and application within UK construction organisations. The results of this testing suggest a number of improvements in the benefits realisation process.

Industrial case study of innovative managerial control system applied to site control process (IMCS-CON)

Abstract: Construction projects are complex, fragmented and highly risk business, due to the nature of construction operations. Therefore project managers require more efficient techniques and tools to plan and monitor the construc-tion project. In recent years many research studies have been carried out in order to make construction industry more efficient, profitable and attractive business. The IMCS-CON developed as decision support system for project mangers to assist project-controlling processes using a holistic approach. The IMCS-CON provide a framework to measure, analyse, review, and report performance data and enabling project management team to make corrective decision and keep project on track. The IMCS-CON system was evaluated using a case study of £2.3 million, three-story residential apartment building project in UK. The IMCS-CON system utilises multivariate statistical process control techniques to monitor the construction site variables. The MSPC combines a large number of variables into few independent vari-ables, which then can be monitored and any process deviations from the normal operating conditions can be identified with corrective actions suggested. The IMCS-CON models on-site information as quantitative variables and uses his-torical data and establishes patterns of correlated variables and assists project management in making future decisions. The outputs can also be visualised in multi-dimensional graphs. Statistics of external variables and internal variables influencing construction site operations were identified using a real life case study. The results of modelling the vari-ables and conducting experiments with IMCS-CON are analysed and discussed in this paper.

Measuring information integration in project teams

Abstract: Integrated project information is the goal for many clients and their project teams. In theory, the aim is to use IT to support a seamless electronic process in which data are entered once and where no manual intervention interrupts the flows across the different life stages. In practice, IT has been used largely to reinforce existing work patterns that fragment the team's efforts. So far, IT has delivered limited benefits. A study of integrated project information has been completed on 11 building projects across four European countries. Degrees of integration of project information have been measured and used to derive some measure of the extent to which project teams are bound together by the use of IT. This paper summarises the 11 case studies, by revealing the extent to which IT has been successfully applied to support integration. The findings provide pointers to the future application of IT by project teams. In this regard, the active interest of the client in the project and its IT infrastructure is emphasised.
