Knowledge-Based Services in Building Management: Online Advisory Expert System

Abstract: The results of investigations within the scope of the ""Knowledge Based Services in Building Management"" research project (Wissensintensive Dienstleistungen im Gebäudemanagement -WiDiG) and the concept of an online advisory expert system (consulting module) for building automation are substantiated in this paper. The trends of the further development of control algorithms of such systems are described. The objective of this project is to investigate the possibility and to produce recommendations for unification of the existing building automation systems and building management systems within the framework of a unified concept.""

Development of Hybrid Simulation and Genetic Algorithms System for Solving Complex Crew Allocation Problems

Abstract: This paper presents an innovative approach to solving complex crew allocation problems in any labour-intensive industry. This has been achieved by combining simulation with Genetic Algorithm (GA). The integrated system determines the least costly and most productive crews to be allocated on any produc-tion processes. Discrete Event Simulation methodology is used to simulate a manufacturing system. A special PROCESS module is developed to overcome limitation of the used simulation software that appears when us-ing normal PROCESS module. A concept of multi-layer chromosome is proposed to store different data sets in multi-layers structure. GA operators were developed to suit such chromosome structure. As a case study, a sleeper precast manufacturing system is chosen to prove the concept of the proposed allocation system. The results showed that adopting Manipulating a number of multi-skilled workers to be allocated among different production processes had a substantial impact on reducing total allocation cost, process-waiting time, and op-timising resource utilisation. 3D visualisation is presented.

Information and Communication Technology for Intelligent and Integrated Controls in Buildings: Current Developments and Future Research

Abstract: A common and acknowledged vision today is the one that, in the future, buildings, along with their components, equipments, and their environment will communicate and be able to provide information on their status ubiquitously. This real-time available information will be interoperable via common protocols for holistic automation & control. The whole building will be supervised by intelligent systems, able to combine information from all connected devices, from the Internet or from energy service providers in order to efficiently control HVAC (heating & cooling), lighting, and hot water systems along with energy production, storage and consumption devices inside the building, taking into account the users' needs and wishes. In such a context, ICT is recognised as key for empowering people in the (built) universe in which they live, with smart e-metering and new smart e-devices – as well as becoming fully pervasive in the future optimization of energy in the built environment - where “Energy-efficient smart buildings” are to be buildings which contain systems that manage information for an optimal operation of building energy flows over the whole building lifecycle.In such a context, CSTB has developed an open framework for data collection and processing, to be installed in any built environment. It supports networked heterogeneous sensors and actuators (with appropriate communication protocols technology), allows assembling various “business” functions (with easy evolution and extension capability thanks to a concept of service composition and event-driven management between modules), can accommodate any hardware platform constraint (memory, computing power), and can be executed in any environments supporting a Java SE implementation. The framework is itself based on an OSGi platform. The notion of “sensor” is to be considered in a comprehensive way: physical sensor (analogic or logic), complex sub-system or meta-sensor (e.g. Agilent data acquisition system or alike), or even external services (e.g. getting weather data via the Internet). Fields of applications are energy-efficiency in the built environment, but also Ambient-Assisted Living (AAL), internal air quality assessment, collection of data related to inhabitants behaviours, etc..The REEB coordination action (European strategic research roadmap to ICT enabled Energy-Efficiency in Buildings and construction), as a European R&D technology roadmap initiative (achieved in the context of an EC-funded Coordinated Action - http://www.ict-reeb.eu) has identified ICT contributions to the energy efficiency of buildings mainly via improvement (and corresponding RTD) in integrated design (and indeed ICT tools for Energy-Efficient design and production management), integrated and intelligent control, user awareness and decision support to various stakeholders throughout the whole life of buildings, energy management and trading, and integration technologies. As far as the integrated / intelligent control field is concerned, REEB has fundamentally identified the following areas for future investigation:• automation & control: system concepts, intelligent HVAC, smart lighting, ICT for micro-generation & storage systems, predictive control;• monitoring: instrumentation: smart metering;• quality of service: improved diagnostics, secure communications;• wireless sensor networks: hardware, operating systems, network design.The paper will first introduce to expectations, requirements and potential future scenarios for ICT to support integrated and optimised control in future so-called smart buildings. It will then introduce to the current trend of developments at CSTB in this area, and will present the CSTBox as a tool federating and/or complementing functions (potentially relying on already installed systems) in the built environment. After a short presentation of the REEB project, the paper will follow up with exhibiting the outcome of the REEB project in terms of roadmapping RTD activities in this technological field, also providing with a first insight of their potential impact in the future.Acknowledgement: the authors wish to thank the European Commission (DG INFSO) for its financial support to the REEB co-ordinated action. The implementation of the industry foundation classes in integrated environments

Abstract: Integrated Computer Environments have been the subject for research for many years. Among others, the issue of exchanging and sharing data between project participants has been their major concern. International initiative has been set up for this purpose Mainly STEP and the IAI/IFCs initiative. The latter aims to produce standard data models for the building industry to facilitate the exchange of data between all partners involved along the project life cycle. On the other hand, the large increase in the Web usage has made the large software vendors such as Microsoft, IBM, SUN, etc. to produce standards for data communication for client-server applications. These attempts have resulted in the production of the CORBA-ORB (Object Request Broker Architecture - Object Request Broker) which has been recommended by the Object Management Group (OMG) and the Microsoft ActiveX. These standards have facilitated the development of distributed objects environments where users can exchange data from and to different servers without knowing where the objects are store. This is an important concept if the implementation of integrated construction environment is to be successful. The aim of this paper is to report on the findings of a large research project which is being carried out, by the AIC (Automation and Integration in Construction) research group, at the University of Salford. Based on the Salford’s previous experience in the development of integrated environments, such as SPACE and OSCON. This project is adopting international standards in data models and communication protocols. The IFCs have been used as the core data model and has been implemented in a three-tier architecture using CORBA-ORB as its communication standards. The proposed environment adopts open standards and focuses on using existing Internet technology. The project aims to: 1. Test the state of the art technologies and recently emerging standards such as CORBA and IFC, 2. Define and select the necessary software components for the integrated environment, 3. Develop an architecture of this environment which will be implemented with the selected software components, 4. Develop a number of use-cases and scenarios to gain an insight on how such an environment can be used by the Construction Industry professionals.

Objects definition and the life cycle of objects

Abstract: In order to produce a complete and efficient objects definition for an integrated environment, it is important that objects are considered within a well defined environment. Objects are subjected to a number of phases during their life cycle depending on the environment within which they are serving. This paper briefly explains a proposed structure for an integrated environment within which a new concept for object life cycle is introduced. The new concept is illustrated in an elements specifications application.

The UK industry knowledge base feasibility study

Abstract: The UK Department of the Environment (DOE) has funded a feasibility study into the concept of an electronic knowledge base for the construction industry. It is envisaged that this knowledge base would provide a single point of entry for the UK, creating a gateway to all information of relevance to the A/E/C industry. A wide range of commercial, social and technical issues have been investigated in the study, which provides a recommendation of the best way forward together with a marketing strategy. The results of the feasibility study are summarised in this paper.

A methodology using domain ontology and SOA for better interoperability in AEC mass customization

Abstract: Today, the OMG’s Model Driven Architecture (MDA) makes available an open approach to write specifi-cations and develop applications, separating the application and business functionality from the platform technology. As well, the Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) establishes a software architectural concept that defines the use of services to support the requirements of software users, making them available as independent services accessible in a standardized way. Together, these two architectures seem to provide a suitable framework to improve construction company’s competitiveness through the adoption of a standard-based extended environment, challenging and enhanc-ing the interoperability between computer systems and applications in industry. Nevertheless, Domain Ontologies (DO) have been recognized more and more as a challenging mechanism to bridge knowledge. The paper, after illustrating the general motivations the construction companies have to adopt open architectures to achieve interoperability for extended and collaborative enterprise practices, presents the emerging model driven and service oriented architectures. Then, it describes an innovative methodology for better interoperability in AEC mass customization. The paper finishes with discussion and concluding remarks concerning the empirical results obtained from the pilot demonstrator.

Telepresence in virtual construction project team communications

Abstract: This paper is concerned with the development of an appropriate communications infrastructure for virtual construction project teams within the framework of concurrent life-cycle design and construction (CLDC). It identifies the key communication facets which need to be addressed, and highlights the fact that these alter through the stages in the project lifecycle. It also argues that finding the right people to communicate with is as important as (if not more important than) finding information within a collaborative environment. The concept of telepresence, which is becoming increasingly important in communications within virtual organisations, is also examined and its potential within a CLDC environment discussed. The approach being explored in a collaborative research project between The University of Teesside and British Telecommunications plc is also briefly presented and the attendant benefits to the construction industty outlined.

A synchronised process/IT model to support the co- maturation of processes and IT in the construction sector

Abstract: In recent years many efforts had taken place in order to develop process and IT maps within the construction sector. However, the subject of co-maturation between IT and the process has not been given enough attention. This has resulted in the development of impractical solutions because of an apparent lack of balance between the IT and process capabilities. For instance, some organisations in the construction sector have adopted the rapid prototyping concept which is widely used within the manufacturing sector without even investing in 3D modelling and VR technologies which are the most appropriate for this task. Paradoxically, some organisations have invested in these technologies, but rapid prototyping is non existent. This paper addresses the issue of co-maturation between the process and IT in order to establish a balanced profile. The work is based on the CMM (Capability Maturity Model) model which was developed by the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon University in order to develop software for the US government, particularly to be used by the Department of Defence. The CMM is a five-level model which include ad-hoc, repeatable, defined, managed and optimised stages. The model is designed so that capabilities at lower stages provide progressively stronger foundations for higher stages, reducing the change management risks. Each development stage - or "maturity level" distinguishes an organisation’s process or IT capability. This paper builds on the work achieved within the generic design and construction process protocol (GDCPP) which is being undertaken at the university of Salford. The main contribution of this paper is a conceptual model of co-maturation between IT and process. A synchorised IT/process model will be presented and discussed. This model is being developed through knowledge obtained form the industrial collaborators of the GDCPP project.
