Designing IT services for the Construction Industry. Lessons learnt for Selection of Validation Techniques

Abstract: Setting up collaborative working practices is a major stake in construction projects because each project is specific in terms of actors involved, documents produced and building elements designed. In such contexts the use of IT groupware tools to improve collaboration and their efficient appropriation by AEC practitioners is really a challenge. Designing such innovative collaboration-support services is an issue largely addressed in the scientific community especially to identify the factors of success/failure of the tools, but also to identify the scientific experimental approaches underlying it. This article describes five case studies of cooperation-support IT developments and for each of them the validation techniques used. It suggests an analytic framework distinguishing between 1) research project aims, 2) working practices and 3) IT developments types. Finally it introduces three experimental levels to be achieved in various research projects types and describes their related experimental properties.

Investigations in the BICT project of state-of-the-art ICT for industrialization of house building processes

Abstract: The research presented here is part of a project named BICT, ”Evaluation of benefits of ICT for the indus-trialization of project and product processes in the construction industry”. Its overall objective is to establish a mutual understanding between the construction industry and R&D actors of the needs and possibilities of ICT. The project is a cooperative effort between Swedish and French researchers and industry representatives within the EraBuild program. It includes an investigation of the processes and ICT tools in a representative house building project, together with a study of the State-of-the-Art of ICT for immediate, short and medium term uptake. This paper presents the main results of the State-of-the-Art study with specific focus on: - Visualization and coordination using digital mock-ups of 3D models; - Model based quantity take-off; - Integration of applications for product design; - Reuse of experience based knowledge. The presented study concludes that the use of integrated 3D applications must be introduced early in the project lifecy-cle in order to pave the way for the use of object-oriented information in downstream processes. This requires common standards for 3D based deliveries developed in cooperation between industry and R&D actors through joint analyses of actual information management both in industrialised partnering-like processes, and fully industrial building proc-esses.

INTEGRATING TRUST CONCEPTS IN A DASHBOARD INTENDED FOR THE BUILDING CONSTRUCTION COORDINATOR

Abstract: The growing complexity of AEC projects leads to increase the importance of the building construction coordinator’s role. Moreover, the uncertainty linked to the environment of the building construction activity makes way for the notion of trust. The coordinator canmake use of a multiple tools/views for accomplishing his mission (e.g. planning, meeting report) but these views offer only a limited vision of the cooperation context. So we suggest analyzing data coming from these different views to obtain some trust indicators informing the coordinator about trust in the good progress of the building construction activity. Our approach distinguishes 4 aspects of the activity conditioning the global trust level: task progress, actor’s performance, documents required to perform the task, and building elements resulting from the task. Our proposal suggests introducing these trust indicators in a dashboard included in a multi-view interface allowing the coordinator identifying the tasks with a low level of trust and understanding the nature of the potential dysfunctions.

A model-based approach to develop a dashboard tool integrating trust concepts in AEC

Abstract: In the Architecture Engineering and Construction (AEC) sector, cooperation between actors is essential for project success. During the building construction activity, the organization of actors is both hierarchical, transver-sal and adhocratic. Moreover, the quality of cooperation is fundamentally influenced by the management of interde-pendences between tasks and between actors. In this context, the development of new assistance tools has to integrate these heterogeneous parameters relative to coordination and trust. We inspired about Model-Driven Engineering ap-proach to propose a models infrastructure integrating cooperation context modelling and views modelling. We develop on the basis of this infrastructure a dashboard dedicated to the building site coordinator. This tool currently in design stage provides indicators about the trust in the good progression of activity. Moreover, it would enable context under-standing by combining these indicators in a multi-views interface. Thus, the user could navigate in the context using multiple views like meeting report, planning, performance evaluation, or 3D mock-up, and obtain more information about a particular indicator.

Versioning structured object sets using text based Version Control Systems

Abstract: With the availability of an affordable and ubiquitous network environment the distributed cooperation of projects can be supported by computer software. Currently, the degree of support of a distributed cooperation is very different in the diverse classes of applications. While in the field of text-based applications the synchronous distributed cooperation is already state-of-the-art, the users of document-based applications can currently only cooperate asynchronously in terms of a workflow by exchanging documents. This contribution describes a solution approach for the re-use of existing document-oriented applications in net-distributed processes. The synchronous cooperation is realized by a novel procedure that stores the structured object sets of existing single user applications in version control systems, where the well proven tools of the software configuration process can be used in distributed construction planning processes as well.

Characterizing the visualization techniques of project-related interactions

Abstract: All construction projects can be considered as cooperative undertakings. Their strategic management as well as the daily operations causes numerous interactions to occur, either among persons or among persons and resources. These interactions have been studied from various viewpoints but few researchers have focused on their visualization. The graphical representation of the cooperation is however a powerful tool to help the project participants to get a correct understanding of the situation. This paper proposes thus a structuring framework (IVF - Interaction Visualization Framework) of the visualization techniques used to display such interactions. Three basic axes of classification are used to structure the study. Which objects are visualized? Why are they visualized? How are they visualized? For each axis, several properties have been identified and the admitted values have been specified. This work can be considered as a first step towards a structured view of the 'visualization of cooperation' domain.

Development of an agent-based workbench supporting collaborative structural design

Abstract: This paper presents an approach towards an adaptive, expandable, decentralized and flexible workbench supporting complex structural design processes using multiagent systems technology. Primarily, this novel workbench aims at assisting design experts according to their specific tasks during a project work and furthermore detecting typical deficiencies and conflicts that may occur in collaboration, cooperation and coordination between the various structural designers. The workbench consists of a set of software agents, that are designed and modeled to integrate typical organizational characteristics of a project work, engineering software and data structures in terms of product models. According to the analysis of structural design processes a theoretical concept of three agent-based submodels is suggested: i) the agent-based collaboration model, ii) the agent-based engineering software integration model and iii) the agent-based product model. In this paper we focus on the agent-based collaboration model. The three models are connected by an agent-based process model. The fundamental solution concepts of this approach are to be substantiated by analyzing the design process of an arched bridge, already erected, as a reference.

ICt for Energy Efficienct buildings: proposed approach for a stakeholders-based strategic roadmap

Abstract: ICT4E2B Forum project aims to bring together all relevant stakeholders involved in ICT systems and solutions for Energy Efficiency in Buildings. Moreover the project has the objective of identifying and reviewing the needs in terms of research and systems integration as well as at accelerating implementation and take-up. ICT4E2B Forum bases its roadmapping activities on the outputs of REEB project that has already developed a high-level roadmap on ICT for Energy Efficient Buildings. Starting from this expert-based work, ICT4E2B Forum intends to promote, through community building activities, a better understanding, a closer dialogue and a more active cooperation between researchers, end-users/practitioners, building owners, technology-suppliers, and software. The exploitation of ICT is consider the adding value in order to support informed decision-making (both human and automated) in the current delivery and in the use of sustainable and energy-efficient buildings and districts. By accomplishing these objectives, ICT4E2B Forum is mapping the sector-specific priorities into a common view and vocabulary, thereby enabling communication and understanding between experts in different sectors that need to join forces in order that fundamental improvements in energy efficient buildings can be achieved. All this coordination work will support in defining future research directions as well as in channelling efforts, while favouring consensus buildings on the roadmap itself.

A SYSTEM OF SYSTEMS (SOS) APPROACH TO DISPUTE

Abstract: There has been an increasing attention towards more effective dispute avoidance and resolution in the construction industry due to the significance of the costs associated with disputes. Many researchers have attempted to develop systems that aim to manage disputes by providing dispute evaluation, negotiation support, litigation prediction and decision support through the use of various tools. Although these systems have been developed separately, a careful consideration shows that they can be incorporated into a meta-system that pools their resources and capacities to obtain more functionality and performance. This aim fits well with the System of Systems (SoS) approach, which includes incorporating a collection of independent and task-oriented systems into a new, more complex system offering more utility than the sum of the constituent systems. After analysing current dispute management systems in the literature, a framework has been developed for the integration of these systems by SoS approach. The primary objective of developing a SoS framework is modelling the opportunities of cooperation while maintaining independence of the constituent systems, and exploring new systems required in an evolving perspective for a holistic management of disputes in the construction domain. The findings reveal that SoS represents a structured and comprehensive approach to modelling dispute management systems as a networked meta-system. SoS approach provides mechanisms to analysing and classifying existing systems, modelling the opportunities of cooperation between the constituent systems, adding or subtracting systems to and from the system in evolution, and maintaining the same amount of management and resources as before with more precise results from each system. As a result, the effectiveness of the constituent systems is expected to increase due to interoperability and resource sharing in the SoS framework.

Multilevel information management in geotechnical engineering

Abstract: A generalized approach is described aiming at the integrated management of heterogeneous information in geotechnical engineering. The generalized architecture of a possible hybrid management system joins two approaches operating on different levels of information integration. This paper analyzes both kinds of systems. In particular notice will be given to the components of a strictly integrated management system for geotechnical engineering, following the demands of time-critical information management. Elements supporting presentation of all kinds of information as well as tools supporting net-based cooperation will be considered. The aspect of demands and potential for ICT support in construction engineering is briefly touched.
