A declarative approach to inter-schema mappings

Abstract: The requirements for the specification of mappings between tools in an integrated and interactive design system are described in this paper. The declarative mapping language, VML, is introduced. VML allows a high level, bidirectional specification of mappings between two arbitrary schemas. To illustrate the utility of VML, a demonstration system consisting of plan definition and code conformance tools is integrated via a common data model using VML mappings. The VML mappings are capable of handling both relational and object-oriented style schemas as well as interactive and batch style design tools. We illustrate the use of VML to specify correspondences between classes, conditional application of correspondences, different styles of equivalence, initialisation conditions as well as method handling for interactive systems.

Utilising product models for information sharing in an integrated cad environment

Abstract: Despite the extensive use of computing technology within the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry during the past few years, the crucial issue of information sharing amongst AEC participants still remains to be addressed. This results in poor building project co-ordination and affects productivity and final outcome. Our objective at South Bank University is to develop integrated CAD systems that utilise conceptual building product models for efficient building-related data representation and exchange. This paper presents our approach in defining a building product model of CAD- related design (i. e. architectural, structural, etc.) that also identifies overlapping sections with non-design data (i. e. project planning, cost estimating, etc.) which are incorporated for producing enriched data specifications extracted from CAD drawings and used by various AEC disciplines. Different strategies for separating multiple-views of the resulting data are also discussed Finally, a prototype system (MicroLink) that runs under Intergraph's MicroStation PC CAD package is presented. The system operates on a partial set of entities of the overall product model and produces semantically-enhanced design data in a declarative form ready for use by knowledge-based systems for automatic construction activity generation.

A Declarative Approach to Cross-Domain Model Analysis

Abstract: The analysis of digital models requires in-depth knowledge of the semantical, syntactical and technical specification of the model schema and its internal representation in the computer. Taking this huge overhead into account, the preparation steps for conducting an analysis onto a digital model can get more dominant than the analysis itself. Beyond that, people involved in providing the technical infrastructure and people conducting the analysis often do not share the same skill set. Productivity gains could be expected, if one side could concentrate on the conceptual-part of the analysis and the other part could focus into the implementation-part of digital model analysis. The concept shown here enables analysts to express elements and terms of an analysis in their own domain-specific language, while the underlying mapping between the conceptual and the technical view onto the system can be set up in a generalized and extensible fashion using state-of-the-art software concepts.
