Managing virtual organization processes by semantic web ontologies

Abstract: Interoperability within Virtual Organisations (VOs) is still only weakly supported by IT frameworks. Whilst service level interoperability has made remarkable progress since the emergence and the rapid growth of SOA and Grid technology in the last years, business processes – which are the driving force of each VO – still suffer distinct conceptual gaps regarding their decomposition to technical transactions. There exists no detailed approach that would allow describing technical as well as business aspects in a coherent yet flexible and extensible way. This paper presents a newly developed semantic framework that targets this requirement. The conceptual background is followed by an introduction of the developed semantic web ontologies. Based on these definitions, dedicated Ontology Services as well as a set of related end-user applications facilitating semantic technology have been designed and implemented. They are presented in the second part of the paper. Reported are results from the EU project InteliGrid (IST-004664; 2004-2007).

Exploring Context-Awareness in the construction logistics services delivery

Abstract: Managing a construction project supply chain effectively and efficiently is extremely difficult due to involvement of numerous sectors that are supported by ineffective communication system. An efficient construction supply chain system ensures the delivery of materials and other services to construction site while minimising costs and rewarding all sectors based on value added to the supply chain. The advancement of information, communication and wireless technologies is driving construction companies to deploy supply chain management strategies to seek better outputs. As part of the emerging wireless technologies, context-aware computing capability represents the next generation of ICT to the construction services. Conceptually, context-awareness could be integrated with Web Services in order to ensure the delivery of pertinent information to construction site and enhance construction supply chain collaboration. An initial study has indicated that this integrated system has the potential of serving and improving the construction services delivery through access to context-specific data, information and services on as-needed basis.

Defining an improvement plan to address design management practices within a UK construction company

Abstract: A UK based design and construction civil and building engineering company has entered into a partnership with Loughborough University and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to develop and deploy design management tools capable of making significant improvements to its design management performance. Before suitable tools could be identified it was necessary to establish the current state of practices within the organisation. This paper describes the methodology, results and conclusions of this initial study. It discusses the current views and approaches to design management within the company, and identify areas where improvement is necessary. Many of these are likely to be relevant to other design organisations. The paper then puts forward a strategy capable of driving change throughout the company. This paper is likely to be of interest to those involved in design management and the development of tools and practices to help the industry improve design management performance.

Building design support by hierarchical expert networks

Abstract: "Rapid advances in parallel processing technologies gave essential impetus to intelligent information processing, which became the driving source of an emerging technology known as soft computing. This calls for intelligent systems that are able to process information which may be complex, uncertain even incomplete or contradictory. In this context, neural networks and fuzzy logic are the essential tools. Considering the merits of each approach separately, most suitable computational intelligence method can be used for a specific application. Additionally, the combination of these methods can provide enhanced information processing for decision-making with enhanced reliability. For building design, the computational intelligence system use a knowledge base formed by means of neural network and fuzzy logic (neuro-fuzzy) techniques, from a building design database. The application of such a system to a building design task was preliminarily demonstrated earlier [1]. The present research describes a systematic neural fuzzy modelling of data that form a knowledge base in a hierarchical form (s.figure below). Each sub-knowledge base represents a local expert, being level-one expert and the association of local experts forms a more comprehensive expert that becomes a global domain expert as level-two. The association of the experts is accomplished by means of fuzzy-logic-driven gating network that performs, the information handling as required. Although, the present paper describes two-level hierarchical experts as local and global, the associations can be done in more subtle form, i.e., in more than two steps so that the level of experts can be categorised in multi-level form. In such more complex structures, multi-level experts require related gating network that could similarly be designed. The building design support system with the expert network developed, as a whole, is generic enough for decision-makings with a novel systematic approach concept using appropriate database. Low-Cost Fleet Management Solutions in the Framework of Emerging Markets

Abstract: Implementation of ITS solutions in the emerging market of Egypt is at an early stage, yet has made significant progress. In the framework of PHAROS project, low-cost smart solutions have been developed for fleet managers to facilitate efficient route choices and eco-driving that minimize fuel consumption and carbon emissions. These solutions were integrated in an existing fleet management system. This paper presents the theoretical and practical formulation of the rescheduling component added to the already existing fleet management system. The rescheduling component is based on the development of an eco-path that considers the "cost" between two consecutive nodes. By the term "cost", more parameters such as path length, travel time, operating costs, energy consumption required for each route, are taken into account. Based on the above decision-routing parameters, through the use of a routing algorithm, the optimal path between the origin and the destination node is proposed.

Utilisation of a 3D Design Data in Controlling Pile Driving

Abstract: This research was concentrating on an exploitation of 3D design data to ground strengthening, especially focusing on the pile driving process. An XML model (schema) was defined for digital piling plan and as-build-data from the piling. The schema was targeted to cover the complete piling information flow from the piling plan from the 3D CAD software to the actual pile realisation data e.g. location and bearing capacity data, produced by the piling machine. In addition to the information management, a guiding system for the piling machine driver was developed. The guiding system included sensors and RTK-GPS positioning system for measuring the location of tool of the piling machine in relation to the planned locations of the piles. The system gives visual instructions for the driver for positioning of the piles according to the plan. A wireless database connection is used for synchronisation of the planned and realised piles information. The progress of the piling work can be easily supervised using an internet browser. The first proof-of-concept system was developed and tested during the year 2009. The main advantages of the system are reduced staking out work, faster pile positioning, automated piling data logging and data transfer between office and worksite and more up-to-date information about the progress of the piling work.

Predictive Risk Modeling of Differential Bridge Settlement

Abstract: Differential settlement between the roadway pavement resting on embankment fill and the bridge abutment built on more rigid foundation often creates a bump when driving from roadway to bridge, and vice versa. This paper studies the problem at a macroscopic level by determining a method to predict the levels of approach settlement to assist designers in developing remediation plans during project development to minimize the lifecycle costs of bridge bump repairs. A macro method considering a combination of maintenance times, maintenance measures, and observed settlement was used to classify the differential settlement scale as minimal, moderate, and severe. A set of project characteristics including approach, abutment type, embankment, foundation, and traffic volume that may influence the formation of differential settlement were identified and used as parameters to develop a model to predict the settlement severity for a given approach. Logistic regression analyses were implemented to identify the relationships between the levels of differential settlement and the input variables for a sample of 600 randomly selected bridges in Kentucky. Geographic region, approach age, average daily traffic, and the use of approach slabs are identified as the four most predominant factors that can significantly affect the formation of differential settlement. Based on the performance of bridge approaches in Kentucky, how those parameters interacted in the prediction model is illustrated in the logistic regressions.

Envisioning the future: built, natural and digital environments

Abstract: The paper will discuss how the forces and opportunities of change strongly related to the evolution of computer model-based design and construction are not only driving progress in Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) through a transition process but promise to advance the state of the profession through the emergence of com-pletely new paradigms. Computer model-based design and construction will not only deal with the utilization of new tools to improve existing work processes, but with the emergence of completely new ways of doing things which will have to be designed, invented or discovered. The paper introduces the Digital Reality, The Digital Built Environment and The Digital World concepts and summa-rizes how we make and use the built, natural and digital environments and how they interrelate. The paper also envi-sions actions that shall promote the extension of current research contributions by strengthening the overlap of re-search and teaching with computer, social and management sciences in order to address the scientific, engineering, economic, social and political aspects about how we design, build and operate the built, natural and digital environ-ments and how to make their intelligent and sustainable use possible in an integrated comprehensive way.

Development of a 3D Highway Modeler using a Driving Game Interface

Abstract: This paper outlines a 3D highway geometric modeling method based on a parametric model involving curvature and gradient functions. Using this method, conditions concerning design standards are input to a computer as numerical functions, with the design velocity, curvature and gradient as variables. We also developed a 3D highway modeler using a driving game interface. To evaluate the interface of the modeler, we conducted experiments and compared the results with those using the mouse-based system in the previous study. As a result, we showed that the system using the driving game interface outperformed the mouse-based system in most categories.
