Construction application of a gen-network : uniform access to standards, products and company information

Abstract: "Facing an increasing competitive environment where flexibility and adaptability to change are the obliged route to success, building and construction companies have to continuously renew their working habits while keeping business processes under quality, time and cost control. In the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) domain, the wide diversity in terms of the object built, but also associated to the geographical dispersion of actors and building sites makes such an agility even more crucial. Considering the design and tendering phase of a construction operation, the architects and construction engineers have to efficiently select the manufactured products that will best suit the project while complying to its numerous constraints. Beyond the functionality, performance and cost characteristics, a suitable product has also to conform to the applying regulations and standards, be eventually accompanied with a corresponding technical agreement, offer acceptable delivery solutions on the building site. Moreover, once identified within a manufacturer catalogue, the product has to be integrated into the architect or engineer application desktop, whether it be a CAD, specification writer or quantity take-off application. Addressing these needs, the Global Engineering Networking (GEN) initiative is promoting the reuse of company internal and external engineering knowledge through the emergence of new kind of global market places where actors publish and retrieve on-line a wide range of engineering information and services. In particular, The Construction Pilot in EP 22 284 GENIAL project demonstrates over the AEC domain, the relevance of new generation of Information Technology infrastructures supporting the erection of Value-Added Service Provider (VASP) sites that materialise the GEN vision, i.e. allowing information and services to smoothly be retrieved where required whilst the succeeding company is concentrating on its core competencies. With such an infrastructure, whether it is through material, performances, manufacturer, regulation or price discrimination, the appropriate component, document or service is rapidly and cost effectively brought on the designer desk for the best value of the overall project. On the other side of the communication pipe, the supplying partner gains the opportunity of reaching an enlarged audience as IT now commonly break any geographical distance. In practice, three major information publishers and a building contractor in Europe initiate the GEN network in the AEC domain through the erection of VASP sites offering product, company or document related information. User queries are governed by various standard (EPIC, UNICLASS) or corpus specific (BATIBASE, EDIBATEC) classification systems. Relevance of the overall approach is demonstrated through the presentation of a large variety of such queries for the various information corpuses used : Techcom company and product information, BIC company, product and document, REEF regulation documentary corpus or EDIBATEC product information."

An integrated management information system for construction projects

Abstract: Current research focus in the construction industry is directed at implementation of an effective information management based integrated system environment. Construction organizations are developing methodologies of integrating information technology in the work environment of their operations. All construction process improvement strategy is based on integration of effective project planning, monitoring and control techniques provided by an enterprise level of integration of all organizational parameters, functions, members and incorporated technologies. Creating an automated information system in computerized environments via networks using web-based technology enables top-level management to visualize various types planning information to support decision making. Based on the Donation Program which, began in 1997, ITU Campus Construction Projects have been multiplying due to the increased donations from volunteer companies and individuals. Istanbul Technical University’s Project Management Center, established as a research institute center under ITU Rectorate with the main aim seeking efficient solutions in planning, executing and controlling all construction projects within the university campus. The university construction projects are financed through two separate funds. PMC is responsible of managing multiple projects financed through the funding bodies, State Budget and ITU Foundation. For this purpose PMC has undertaken a research project “An Integrated Automation System for ITU Campus Construction Projects”. The objective of this project was to develop an integrated information management tool for effective management of multiple construction projects consisting of monitoring schedule, cost and funding components. This paper describes the model involving the integration of an automation system through decision support utilities for multi-project analysis using web-based technology. The system formulates a process for accumulating the data (all project related documents) in a multi-project environment for multi-task decisions to achieve completion of the multi-projects on time within budget. A review of similar systems available in other countries will be discussed in detail. The paper concludes with a discussion of how the proposed system contributes to the development of the construction industry

Low-Cost Fleet Management Solutions in the Framework of Emerging Markets

Abstract: Implementation of ITS solutions in the emerging market of Egypt is at an early stage, yet has made significant progress. In the framework of PHAROS project, low-cost smart solutions have been developed for fleet managers to facilitate efficient route choices and eco-driving that minimize fuel consumption and carbon emissions. These solutions were integrated in an existing fleet management system. This paper presents the theoretical and practical formulation of the rescheduling component added to the already existing fleet management system. The rescheduling component is based on the development of an eco-path that considers the "cost" between two consecutive nodes. By the term "cost", more parameters such as path length, travel time, operating costs, energy consumption required for each route, are taken into account. Based on the above decision-routing parameters, through the use of a routing algorithm, the optimal path between the origin and the destination node is proposed.

Facility knowledge environments: ebuildings, culture and technology

Abstract: "The convergence of emerging cultural analysis tools and knowledge management solutions are creating facility knowledge environments. This environment combines web-based cultural and technological solutions that are assisting corporate and government agencies with substantial life-cycle time and money savings. The ability to map the traditional corporate hierarchy with the new reality of internal cultural networks provides a roadmap that ""target markets"" internal knowledge. Experience how Silicon Valley-based high tech corporations and United States government agencies are combining these cultural maps with computer networks, portable Palm devices and the life-cycle design of facility environments, providing an enterprise the enabling mechanism toward controlling traditional corporate cost centers like operations and facilities. These initiatives are being measured through an array of metrics that will be shown. These initiatives (both private and government) began in the Fall of 1998."

Multicriteria decision making in n-D

Abstract: The paper concerns engineering design governed by multiple objective criteria that are in conflict and compete for available resources (material, financial, etc.). A multicriteria decision making (MCDM) strategy is pre-sented that employs a tradeoff-analysis technique to identify compromise-design solutions that mutually satisfy the competing criteria in a Pareto-optimal sense. The concepts are initially illustrated in detail for a design governed by n=2 conflicting criteria. Curve-fitting, equation-discovery and equation-solving software are employed to find competi-tive general equilibrium states corresponding to Pareto-tradeoff designs of a flexural plate governed by conflicting weight and deflection criteria. The MCDM strategy is then extended to designs involving more than two conflicting cri-teria, and is applied for a bridge maintenance plan design governed by n=3 criteria. The paper concludes with a dis-cussion of the application of the MCDM strategy to designs involving n=4 and n=11 conflicting criteria.

Modelling static and dynamic knowledge during design

Abstract: The IS0 STEP standards for product data modelling and exchange are based on the use of Express. Express has acknowledged limitations. Modifications have been suggested to extend Express (Express-E) into a more object-oriented language and to add rules as a means of encoding knowledge. The EDM group have presented solutions to many of these limitations for the modelling of buildings. This paper discusses BDeCS (Building Design and Construction System), an interactive system that supports building design and construction. BDeCS uses ideas from Express, EDM and the various knowledge representation formalisms developed in AI research. The initial development of BDeCS concentrated on the representation of knowledge within the system. The user interface was then developed around methods of interacting with the howledge in as "natural" a way as possible. Limitations of both knowledge representation formalisms from the AI field and traditional software development have been identified. The needs for extensibility and sharing of information among all of the members of the building design and construction team have lead to a software architecture that is unique. Methods of organising teams of people to work concurrently on the one project, while maintaining consistency of the data have also been developed.

An application of neural network in post-occupancy evaluation of underground stations

Abstract: "The architectural and construction design deals very often with the word quality. This term is so vague and broad that the main difficulty arises if one needs to determine its aspects. It is rather simple to deal with the quantifiable building standards. The problem is how to demystify and thereafter integrate this fuzzy concept of quality into design. As an example we will use underground stations as a design problem area for two reasons. First of all, these spaces are rather young structures that have a high potential in the future. The efficiency of underground transport and importance of multiple space usage in the densely built urban areas are only some benefits that these spaces can offer. But yet many realized underground projects were not satisfactory to the users. Second reason lies in a fact that these spaces have their own limitations. Some qualities that are so obvious for the aboveground buildings, such as daylight or view, are rather difficult to obtain in underground spaces. Therefore, in these spaces the word quality is even more sensitive. But the literature that the architects can consult regarding these problems is rather scattered and difficult to obtain. One of the reasons is a lack of detailed documentation on actual applications of the theories followed by the research results and applied techniques. In this paper we used the AI technique, a Neural Network, for data analysis. The main objective of this paper is to develop a Support Model that will enable quality measurement of underground spaces in a systematic way. In order to avoid the ad-hoc design solutions for underground spaces, there is a need for systematic approach to their design. In such way the intuitive approach to problem solving can be minimized. This paper deals with following topics: 1. aspects that determine the quality of space 2. classification of psychological and spatial aspects 3. development of conceptual framework 4. application of Neural Network for post-occupancy evaluation 5. results and endeavor design guidelines First three topics will deal with criteria definition, which were necessary for design of the experimental part of a research. The experimental research, which was carried out at the site of one underground station, provided the necessary data. The main emphasis of the paper will be on Neural Network application (topic 4), which will be used to treat the data gathered on underground station. The main objective is to verify the consistency of the outcomes against the predefined criteria."

Product modeling strategies for today and the future

Abstract: Today, there is a growing set of technologies being developed for information exchange in the construction industry. These range from Aspect Models in specific product areas to large scale integrated product models, to new languages such as EXPRESS-X and EXPRESS-2. The purpose of this paper is to sort out and review these various efforts, from several different perspectives: * in terms of what can be used now or in the near future in a production form; * in terms of the significant technical issues and limitations that may require generation changes in exchange technologies; * in terms of external business practices (reflecting case studies), practical benchmarks and adoption criteria, political and other externalities that are affecting these efforts. The survey will review the following issues: * current capabilities of ISO-STEP Part definitions to support information exchange in the building industry; * current efforts by IAI, BCCM in STEP, and other parallel activities and their potential contribution and pitfalls (problems to be overcome); * different current research efforts and the problems and solutions they identify, including COMBINE, EDM-2, VEGA, work at CIFE at Stanford University. Hitherto underdeveloped model aspects, such as capturing the semantics of the client's brief, or capturing design evolution (program, decisions and rationale), modeling performance assessments, and others such as relevant standards, construction site handling, etceteras will be reviewed and priorities assessed. Over the last ten years, the set of requirements that a building product model must meet in order to be accepted in practice as a significant 'productivity enhancement has incrementally expanded. That is, as various research goals have been set, then met, the true extent of the challenge for realizing production-based building product modeling has grown. We will review this expanding set of requirements and attempt to scope their final range. These requirements include, among other aspects: * 'semantic coverage', * level of interoperability across applications, * level of embedded project management control, and * maintained linkages to parallel 'unstructured' information flows, e.g. managed by Engineering Data Management and Document Management software. It will be argued that a viable growth scenario regarding the semantic coverage of building models is likely to be a determining factor in the way that CAD vendors will embrace these as the basis for developing the next generation of architectural CAD software. Priorities of development will be identified and compared with perceived market pulls. The perspective taken will emphasize the US point of view. However, we will endeavor to also weight significantly the European situation and efforts. The result of these perspectives will be to identify 2-3 scenarios of future evolution in the area of building product modeling, with an assessment of their likelihood of coming to be, and the critical issues needed to accomplish them.

Overview of Concepts for Model Checking

Abstract: This paper gives an overview and a description of different concepts for model checking. Model checking is defined as execution of predefined rules on a building information model, e.g. an IFC-file. Rules can be based on laws, regulations, codes, standards, advisory material or self defined requirements for generally or project specific use. The different concepts will be presented with a description and examples of use related to stages in the life cycle of the design process (ISO 22263:2008). The paper will discus mixed use of these concepts in basis of IDDS, integrated design and delivery (IDDS, 2010). Generally should model checking be use to support areas where the designer is not an expert – or other (repetitive) tasks human performance is error prone. An model who have passed all checks can at it’s best said to be “not bad”, and never to be the best designed building. Reasoned feedback is an important part of model checking.The following concepts will (so far) be presented: A) Validating model checking. The checking is performed against a set or rules, that all must be passed, or not activated, to pass the validation. Examples are checking against codes or standards. Following sub-types: Geometry based, information based and mixed systems will be explained. B) Asking model checking. This is rules applied on defined situations who ask for a choice between different alternatives. Examples are choose of venetian blinds and ventilation related to area of window. C) Self checking and adaptive model checkingExample of this is the adaptation of the diameter of the column in response to number of floors.
