Concurrent engineering in the tendering process of building and construction

Abstract: CONCUR (Concurrent Design and Engineering in Building and Civil Engineering) is a four year initiative in the European Union Brite-EuRam workprogramme involving industry partners Skanska (Se), IVO Power Engineering (Fi) and Taylor Woodrow (UK), the specification body STABU (Nl), R and D institutions VTT (Fi) and TNO (Nl), and universities DUT (Nl) and KTH (Se). The project will develop, implement and industrially deploy an integrated CAx environment for concurrent construction tendering. CONCUR is addressing the integration of information in the stages which lead to submission of tenders. The goal is to reduce tendering cost by 30 - 50% using integrated information systems and applications. The tendering process is a complex process involving many disciplines each of which uses different types of information. . In essence it is an information refinement process, in each refinement cycle addressing the high risk aspects of the moment. In CONCUR we are addressing the integrated use of information and applications, using Project (Product and Process) Data Technology Using the major informational items the refinement process will come to information specifications. The specifications being derived are not re-invented but use is made of existing and emerging standards such as STEP and IAI. Results of the CONCUR efforts can be fed back to STEP and IAI.

Design and assessment of prospective mobile services for construction

Abstract: Mobile applications become more and more used in both private and professional activities.Innovation through mobile services specification and prototyping becomes a major trend inconstruction sector research. The project presented in this paper aims both at demonstrating theinterest of mobile technologies for assisting building construction coordination and to elicitate themost interesting and common requirements of construction practitioners for this type of application.Then the paper focuses on the method used for specifying basic requirements and the experimentalprotocol setup for assessing the developed prototype. The main outputs are a set of specifications and aprototype of mobile application as well as a method for defining experimental protocols in a context ofservice-based innovation. The prospects envisage considering context-aware mechanisms for therecommendation of mobile services to construction practitioners.

Multi-model Environment: Links between Objects in Different Building Models

Abstract: The current IFC specifications include relations between objects and enable representation of complex structures in a building product model. However, several research projects have addressed the problem of one integrated model by pointing out the different content and structure of different design domains. The existing software products cannot support all features of the IFC specifications, and because of the structure of AEC industry there are no potential customers for applications which would cover all different information needs. We believe that there will be several instantiated models representing a building project, and these models share some parts of the information which must be linked between the models. However, IFC specifications do not enable links between objects in separate instantiated models. This paper will (1) discuss the reasons for the separation of instantiated models, (2) present the necessary extensions of the IFC specifications, (3) include examples of the links between the requirements model and architectural design model, and (4) discuss some possibilities how to implement this link in a model server environment.

Objects definition and the life cycle of objects

Abstract: In order to produce a complete and efficient objects definition for an integrated environment, it is important that objects are considered within a well defined environment. Objects are subjected to a number of phases during their life cycle depending on the environment within which they are serving. This paper briefly explains a proposed structure for an integrated environment within which a new concept for object life cycle is introduced. The new concept is illustrated in an elements specifications application.

Enterprise integration of future building design systems

Abstract: The paper deals with the project and enterprise environment of integrated building design systems (IBDS), such as the one targeted in the European collaborative research project COMBINE. "he research has concentrated on the concept of a set of separate actors, grouped around a common data repository. Its deliverable consists of the first large-sized fully implemented conceptual building model. The actual data exchange is realized by STEP interfaces supported through a COMBINE interface kit. The resulting prototype was demonstrated in a workshop with design practitioners. The second phase of COMBINE has started recently and will build upon the above deliverables by combining them into an operational system, according to functional specifications derived with the help of practitioners in typical design office settings.

Prediction of metal creep behaviour used in building energetic systems using finite element method

Abstract: A large number of engineering systems operate under multiaxial stress conditions and at the same time under special environment conditions. Because of the fact that optimal procedure design, based on the design specifications will dictate the design life under such mentioned conditions, it is of transcending importance to make an analysis of the time-dependent effects such as creep and relaxation. The paper deals with the numerical modelling of creep behaviour of the building energetic structure members which operate under special environment conditions. Mechanical sublayer method using finite element procedure is used. Using viscoplastic models two applications are presented.

User requirements modelling and design of collaborative virtual reality design systems

Abstract: Advanced Information Technology today gives us the opportunity to implement sophisticated distributed systems for collaborative design. Persons with different interests and competencies in the building process such as architects, installation engineers, structural engineers, clients, builders can all at least theoretically be brought together in a distributed design space where a virtual building will be designed, build, and functionally evaluated. A design space build in a virtual reality environment will enable us to realistically and efficiently simulate the form, function, and construction of the building object under consideration. In this connection we made the following definition of a Virtual Workspace. 'The Virtual Workspace, VW, is actually the new design room designed to fit new and existing design routines. VW may well be a mixed reality environment. The VW will host all design partners from project start with different access and visibility (for persons and groups) in space and time to the project, and will promote building up shared values in projects. The VW thus acts as a communication space with project information support in adapted appearances. VW gives access to general and specific IT-tools ' The paper presents experiences from the early phases of user requirements formulations and design of such collaborative design spaces. The findings are mainly based on collaborative university and consultant engineering company work done in the EU project 'Distributed Virtual Workspace for enhancing Communication within the Construction Industry - DIVERCITY' as well as experiences from student collaboration in distributed learning environments and earlier research within the area. It is extremely important to bridge the gap between the user requirements specifications and the actual interface design and implementation of the underlying operational models of the distributed virtual workspace system. This is certainly true as we actually design a new type of design artefact that will highly influence the traditional working methods and integration of design resources. The early conceptual design of the virtual workspace follows the so called Contextual Design methodology which gives input to the subsequent data modelling work and implementation in an object oriented web distributed environment. The method used is described and examples on resulting Work Models (work flow, sequence and artefact models) are presented and commented on.
