The building model revisited: a conceptual object model for architectural design in the early design stage

Abstract: When building an architectural model from the beginning on computer, a central object model of the design process is essential: a model that describes all architectural entities used by the architect, the constraints on these entities and relations between them, together with the basic operations they undertake. This model should be able to support a great variety of design approaches. Appropriate interfaces with existing software packages provide the opportunity to perform all kind of tests on the design, allowing the different actors in the design process to make use of the model's data. A first prototype model built using the conceptual design method M.E.R.O.DE (Modeldriven Entity-Relationship Object-oriented Development) is presented.
