Comparison of non-linear optlmlsatlon with genetic algorithms in the case of i-beam optimal design according to eurocode 3

Abstract:This paper compares three different methods for non-linear optimisation of steel I-beams design according to European pre-standard Eurocode 3. The first two methods are based on non-linear programming, which is briefly introduced. The third method - Genetic algorithms - is based on heuristics and is widely used in many practical optimisation problems. All three methods were used on two examples. The results show that all three methods give similar solutions. Non-linear programming methods outperform genetic algorithms when computational time is taken into account, but genetic algorithms require much less coding and are able to locate global optimum better than non-linear programming methods.
