Supporting decisions and conflicts in preliminary bridge foundation design

Abstract: This paper describes a decision support system developed to assist bridge designers with the early stages of foundation design. Decisions taken at the early stages of design have significant implications later in the design, both in terms of cost and ease of construction. The system is designed to help the bridge engineer make more informed design decisions and has been developed using information acquired from bridge engineers, geotechnical engineers and estimators. The ethos of the system is to support the designer in their decision, whilst leaving them in control of the decision making process. To achieve this, the system provides enhanced levels of information and greater flexibility to identify and explore design options, giving information on the implications of design decisions in terms of constraints and conflicts. This facilitates an improved search of the design space which can only be advantageous. The system is developed in Visual C++ and follows an object based representation.
