Summary: |
This paper describes a decision support system developed to assist bridge designers with theearly stages of foundation design. Decisions taken at the early stages of design havesignificant implications later in the design, both in terms of cost and ease of construction. Thesystem is designed to help the bridge engineer make more informed design decisions and hasbeen developed using information acquired from bridge engineers, geotechnical engineersand estimators. The ethos of the system is to support the designer in their decision, whilstleaving them in control of the decision making process. To achieve this, the system providesenhanced levels of information and greater flexibility to identify and explore design options, giving information on the implications of design decisions in terms of constraints andconflicts. This facilitates an improved search of the design space which can only beadvantageous. The system is developed in Visual C++ and follows an object based representation. |
