Summary: |
This paper illustrates the use of computer - aided graphic tools in participatory urban planning decision processes. Based on communicative planning and soft decision - aiding theories, the main goal of such a process is knowledge building in order to reach informed consensus. Three graphic devices were used to such an end: traditional geographic maps, mental, and causal maps. All three yielded positive results, but especially the last two, unconventional, types. They fostered intense debates while, at the same time, improving focus on specific matters, and were valuable knowledge building tools. Causal maps were considered the most innovative, because of their capacity to improve the understanding of the urban system and its interrelated parts. |
