Summary: |
The introduction of information systems into constructioncompanies to facilitate the organisation and management ofconstruction is often carried out on an ad hoc basis. Stand-alone applications are often employed in providingcomputerisation for specific functions and tasks in order toimprove efficiency in the generation of information. Quite oftenthis results in short term benefits, but can create problems asorganisations grow and integrated information demands becomegreater and more complex.Without consideration of adequate information technologystrategy, the benefits to be gained fron the integrated approachare not always fully realised. To successfully implement integrated information systems, severalissues must be considered. This includes the identification ofboth problems and user requirements to allow the establishment ofa specification for the design and eventual implementation of anew information system.important considerations during this procedure must also includea company's organisation structure and culture, together withcompany operating characteristics, People within an organisationare also influential to a system's success, and correct trainingand user involvement at the analysis and design stages areimportant to the eventual acceptance and success of a system. One method of integration is illustrated, together with theprocedures and issues to be addressed. System maintenance andenhancements for expansion of an integrated information systemare also considered. |
