Based on three years of research on distributed Engineering groups in a Norwegianconsultant company, this paper attempts to convey the link between current strategicdecisions and a possible work situation for an engineer by the year 2002. The focus is on theinterplay among engineers in a distributed organisation and how this interplay is supportedby technology. IT strategy is an important aspect. Strategy is discussed in general and anextension to the classic strategy terms is proposed. A first level IT strategy for the actual caseis presented. The conclusions from the scenario is that the most important competitiveadvantage is the ability to develop and offer high quality services that otherwise would havebeen impossible. The single most important enabler is competence. This points in turn to astrategy focused on continuously developing new competence among the employees (lifelonglearning). |
