The Industry Foundation Classes, IFC, are developed by the InternationalAlliance for Interoperability, IAI, to provide for data exchange and sharingcapabilities for the building and construction sector of the industry. Sincethe foundation of the IAI in 1995 two releases of IFC have been publishedand the third release is on its way. Many prototype implementations byleading software companies have proved the IFC specifications, andcommercial products to satisfy the end user demands can be expected withinthe next few quarters. The paper highlights the major development stepsbetween the recognition of end user needs to improve business processesand the fulfillment of those needs by IFC specifications andimplementations. Emphasis is put on the modeling of business processes,the provision of use cases, the integration of domain requirements within asingle integrated but modular information model, and the underlyingmethodology and model architecture. |
