"Product models are far too complicated for everyday users to browse or editwithout a graphical user interface hiding the complexity of the datastructure. Public domain virtual reality browser can be used as aninterface to a background application, like ProMoTe, capable of launchingother applications like CAD programs, word processors, spread sheets andinstance editors. All data linked to an instance can be browsed and editedby simply pointing the instance from the VR model and then selectingpreferred operation from a popup menu. This enables editing of data in themodel itself and editing of all external files linked instances. If the product model is accessed through the Internet, VR model provides anultra light interface to the shared model. When user makes a request to theserver, it automatically generates a new VR model according tospecifications in the data model. Downloading the generated VR model, usercan select the instance he wants to browse. The actual transfer of data iscontrolled by the background application, which provides all thefunctionality required for the connection to the server. Also control overdownloaded data, including the capability of launching the requiredapplications for linked files, is provided by this background application." |
