Product modelling concepts, methods, techniques, and experiences have reached anevidently higher level of maturity and applicability. This paper presents theevolution of the road product model PMC from its first concepts in 1993 to thelatest application, which is based on the XML technology and on the networkconcept of the Virtual Product Model. The paper compares the PMC with otherexisting road models, the RSMK, OKSTRA, and the Swedish National RoadAdministration model. One of the main characteristics of the PMC are its simplicity and modularity, whichhave been intentionally preserved from the earliest version, although there havebeen plans to essentially extend the model and it's complexity in the meantime. Thepaper explains the reasons for such directives.Furthermore, applications based on the latest version of the PMC road productmodel are presented. The paper concludes with a discussion on the effectiveness ofdifferent product modelling concepts and summarizes the relevant experiencesgathered by the authors. |
