Summary: |
Cost estimation of construction projects is a difficult and complex task especially inpreliminary stage of design. For many years, construction costs have been estimated byexperienced personnels, such as quantity surveyors or cost engineers. However, underestimation and overestimation do occur. With the lack of detailed information onthe construction site and building itself, a precise cost estimate for a construction projectis hardly achieved. Hong Kong has significant construction activities. A fast andaccurate knowledge-based system that can give expert knowledge during the initial costplanning stage would increase its competitiveness. In the new era of informationtechnology, many research projects in information technology and knowledge-basedapplications for construction industry have been established. The authors investigate theuse of knowledge-based approach to perform cost estimation on construction projects atearly conceptual stage. Knowledge for Hong Kong situation has been established inpractical terms by collaborating with several quantity surveying firms or departmentslocally. The proposed system could be used for training fresh graduates andundergraduate students about construction cost estimation in Hong Kong. |
